Title: Seeking Serpent Puzzles/Rituals, late winter 808
Post by: Chel Verdansk on March 19, 2017, 06:00:13 pm
My friends,

At Ruins of Farseer, I was approached by Courier who works for Order of Seeking Serpent, and whose name I regretfully forget, and given a package wit what was two puzzles.  Dey were found in Order's archives, and sent to me.  When put puzzles togeter, dere were two rituals.   Dat is, I tink dey are rituals, as written in Old Language.  I give words here, in hopes people can help decipher dem eventually.

1)
Zhotha 'e'ena toshonzhotha
Toshonzhotha 'izena kanonla
Zhadogondun nazhinzhana

2)
Zhotha tathona tuthona ke mabo'o'ola
Zhotha dhomane dhomana toshonzhotha
Zhotha 'izena matizhak matizhala

Also, one first puzzle had picture of snake next to picture of some oder animal, perhaps cat, wit claws and a LONG tail.

So, we know "zhotha" = snake, and "toshonzhotha" = "owl-snake," and OWZS told us tale of toshonzhotha dat portrayed it as some sort of guardian beast.  But oder words still puzzle.

'izen is light, so maybe 'izena is "to make light"?

"Nazhinzhana" is something like "transform" - it's a verb based on the word for "phoenix," and Shoshon said that that word can imply transformation.

"Zhadogondun" was on some of the plaques, too. "Zhado" is "stone."

Greetings,

Miri, I agree with you that 'Izena likely means "to light", or "illuminate".  It is consistent with our previous observations.  This would mean that the first "a" in "-ana" is removed when the original word ends in a vowel.  By this same reasoning, I surmised that "Nazhinzhana" is the action-based form of "phoenix".  I surmised "reborn" or "become" because of one of the plaques that refered to "seven-community" "nazhinzhana" "one-community".

Stay warm,
Shoshann

The courier's name is Samgam.

Something possibly of interest, or possibly of no importance at all ...

After defeating the challenge of the Toshonzhotha, it said something to me.  I was still in pain from its touch, so I could not parse the words I was hearing, but I had the same thought I did when I first saw your puzzles, Chel.  It was a lot of "Z"s.

I wonder if what it said was one of those phrases, but the pain blurred my ability to discern what I heard.

Ah, yes!  Tank you!  So many names, so many people to get to know.  And mind not what used to be.

No, sorry.  Always terrible wit names.  So I do tank you for reminder.

As for what emissary said, it happens.  But next time you in much pain, you must remember to pay attention to words!

(I kidding.  I probably would have done same.)

I have made some edits as I compare original and what I wrote.  Sorry about mistakes.

"Nazhinzhana" is something like "transform" - it's a verb based on the word for "phoenix," and Shoshon said that that word can imply transformation.

Not "transform."  "Reborn."

"Zhotha does something Toshonzhotha
Toshonzhotha illuminates the knowledge
The Plains of Stone are reborn."

When I walked de Weave when we first arrived, seeking knowledge of de promise given to de Zoku, one of de tings dat I heard was, "The warriors of the Zhadogondun will prove their worth and kill the Nightmare Lord."

We are in Zhadogondun.

I have also suspected that "reborn" is a closer translation from other places it has appeared. Though I'd have to consult my notes to give specific examples. It also is consistent with the idea that it's the verb form of "phoenix"

Dhomana makes a LOT more sense! And fits our theory of it being a verb meaning something like opposing much better.

So, I t'ink I 'ave translated de puzzles.  When I initially wrote about d'em, I put d'em in de wrong order.

Zhotha tuthona ke mabo'o'ola
Zhotha dhomana toshonzhotha
Zhotha 'izena matizhala

Zhotha 'e'ena toshonzhotha
Toshonzhotha 'izena kanonla
Zhadogondun nazhinzhana

Snake travels to the north
Snake vies with Basilisk
Snake learns the Tizha

Snake calms Basilisk
Basilsk learns the knowlegde
Zhadogundun is reborn

Yes, I think you have the correct translation, Chel! Bravo.

I wonder if there is another meaning of Tizha, or if it somehow connects to the Library of Tizha?

And I wonder if the Trial of the Snake will reveal knowledge of how to restore Zhodogondun, or whether we will somehow need to invoke Tyrissi to confront the Basilisk? Or something else entirely.

Chel, you mentioned you thought this was a ritual.  Do you think we should try to perform it? Or try to learn more about it first?

I'm all in for whatever needs to happen to move this forward.  I want to see the Zoku/Zhad have a homeland again.

"Tizha" may 'ave some od'er meaning as well, but I believe d'ese puzzles are talking about de library in some way.  It may be a ritual, but I suspect d'at before it is performed, de knowledge implied should be discovered.

i wonder if 'izena in this context might mean "illuminates" or "makes known", rather than "learns"?

If so, we better get to work on finding Tizha. My bet is that Beyza knows it.
